Isn't he a gorgeous
boy?? Laddie is a tri color 17 month old neutered
collie. We have been a Foster home to Laddie for 10
days as of October 13, 2003. We have a home that has
a large fenced yard and it is only my husband,
myself now and a miniature 8 year old daschund that
occupy this property. Both my husband and myself are
employed and are away from the home 9 hours each day
during the week. We found Laddie to be a very
friendly "handsome" dog who strongly favors women.
He will tolerate men but becomes very animated when
a female enters his space. We found he was house
trained, comes when you call. He is a counter surfer
to the max so needs to be watched. Laddie also likes
the frig and garbage. He thinks he needs to be a lap
dog and will sometimes jump up on a person when he
meets you. We think he is very retrainable. He
usually stops on command and will work to get back
in good graces - he wants to please. We have crated
him at night and when we are at work. He loves walks
but will wander on the leash. He loves playing with
his toys and is great fun to play with. He has a
soft bite (is "mouthy") and will bite your hand and
arm as herding breeds sometimes do. He will stop on
command or can easily be redirected to bite a toy.
Laddie is active when he is first out of his crate
but will "settle" down and chill out. He likes to
nap in cool places (like in front of a fan) and like
a typical Collie wants to be where all the action is
happening. Laddie really enjoys playing with other
dogs his size! He has a good nature and would be a
wonderful pet for a family that has children over 10
years and an adult female that would nurture him and
give him guidance. Laddie should have some formal
obedience training in his forever home, so he can
continue to learn how to behave like a gentleman.
Laddie is a great dog who just needs some guidance.
November 3 update:
Well Laddie is getting more comfortable every
day. He has started getting jealous over Oscar (
our Miniature Dachshund), so we have to try and hug
and pet 2 dogs a once. He is also jealous over us
when we hug or set and talk he wants to be between
us. This is challenging when one is 24 inches high
and the other is about 6 inches high.
Then on the flip side he is protective of Oscar.
Oscar loves to play growl when we play with him and
Laddie thinks we are picking on Oscar and Laddie
will push us out of the way. Then others times
Laddie and Oscar wrestle together. So we have all
the personalities come out.
Laddie has enjoyed the snow, no problem with going
outside to do business. We have had gun
shootings heard from the duck hunters and Laddie has
not showed us that it bothers him. We have not had
a thunder storm since we got him, so that would be
the big test.
He has showed us that he really does NOT want to
leave the home place. He has gotten out of the
fence a couple of times (my mistake for leaving the
door or gate open), He just came to find me in the
front yard and wanted to see what I was doing. He
has gotten part way across the garage floor towards
open yard, but when I call him he has come back and
went back in the fenced yard without
having to lead him back with the collar. He loves
his toys and he play fetch outside ot inside and
loves to bounce his tennis ball on the deck or in
the house, this can be really funny at times.
With all this in mind, Laddie would do great with
an adopter that can spend time with him. He would
probably do better without other animals or a least
some larger animals. If he is alone his jealousy
would not show and he would love to have a master
all to his own. I believe he would be faithful and
follower of someone that can give him attention and
love. He loves hugs and still prefers women.
Laddie being still in a grown up puppy stage, he
needs his exercise, if not done outside then he will
do some playing inside. He not wanted to
counter surf as much as when we first got him, This
would be some obedience training. He does not mind
the vacuum, but does stay away (does NOT attack the
vacuum).
I don't know what happen in his past, but when I
went to shake the rugs Laddie ran to the very back
corner of our fenced yard. With that the adopter
should be mindful and keep him in the house when
shaking rugs or if tied up outside then make sure
you shake the rugs on the other side of the house.
We feel he needs someone that will spend time with
him. Laddie would probably do very well without a
fenced yard, but again he will need to have walks
and play time. He has shown us that he does not
have a run away attitude, he does love to socialize
with the neighbors. He may follow another dog that
runs, but he has always come to us when we call
him.
Laddie is being fostered near Lake Mille Lacs in MN
