Grizz now Marco  Adopted  1/04

Grizz is a 16 month old male blue merle.  He was an owner surrender with his littermate Bear.

This is a little bio of a Blue Merle named Grizz though  I call him Marco, as it seems to suit him more than Grizz.

He did not respond to “Grizz” when I first brought him home  (only a week ago) so I didn’t see altering his name as a problem.  He is a delightful adolescent male.  I have yet to witness any aggression in his behavior even when he is frightened.

His nature is very gentle and sweet. I have another collie named Hunter.  They immediately got along when I introduced them.  Grizz seems to be learning a lot from Hunter who is 4 years old and has a wonderful disposition. Hunter also came from Collie Rescue when he was Grizz’s age. I do not find Grizz to be difficult in any way.

Naturally, he will need time and a lot of love to feel comfortable in a new home.   He does experience separation anxiety when I leave for any length of time but I believe that this is normal in this situation.  He is not destructive.  My son, Luke, who is 14, wants me to add that he is playful and a quick learner.  He had very little training in the way of commands when he came to us and is already adept at several commands we have taught him.  He is very good with other animals and doesn’t seem to have typical fears (he likes the vacuum cleaner!).

He is, like most collies, very affectionate.  He sleeps next to my bed. I have already trained him not to leap onto my bed especially in the early AM when he wants to say hello.  He has a wonderful voice, deep and sonorous. I believe he would like country living but I live right in Madison and he’s quite at home here.  He is getting used to seeing people walk down my street and is barking less at passersby.

Physically, he is strong.  His colors are wonderful – a lot of white, some black and gray and sable color on his face.

I have very little negative to say about this collie and I trust that he will find a gentle place.   Grizz has displayed some shyness around men which needs to be investigated further, so please check back for updates and progress.

December 11 update:

Grizz has a fear of gun shot like noises - he got quite fearful when he heard the sound of staple guns.  Grizz seems mostly OK with men.

He seems to be skittish only infrequently, and it is usually when he is startled by something (male or female).
What I see with Grizz is an exceptionally well mannered, mellow collie - particularly given that he is only 16 months old.

I think that we need to place him in a home that would be typical of most homes that we look for - with people that love dogs, respect them and who would provide a positive environment.  The only restriction that I can imagine for him is that he would be happiest in a home with another dog that he could play with.

.Grizz is being fostered in Madison, WI.
