New to Rescue!
Maggie is a young girl of 3 or 4 years of age, who was found wandering in Southern Minnesota. There might be a little Golden Retriever or Spaniel mixed in with Maggie's predominant collie genes. Other than a few broken teeth, the vet says there are no health issues, and once she got a good bath and brushing (which she forlornly tolerated), Maggie
perked up as if to say "Ah, I feel so much better!" She of course was
then given a treat and taken for a walk.
Stairs are no problem for Maggie, in fact she's extremely agile (she might be a champion Agility dog for the right person!). Maggie is fully housebroken, and knows all the basic commands (come, sit, lay, stay,
no), and in addition, loves to have people shake her paw. She understands hand signals also, being the very bright and alert girl that she is. Her foster mom says she has great recall, and walks great on a leash with very little pulling.
Maggie isn't a big barker, but does do her duty by barking if the doorbell rings, or if someone is coming in the house or walking by.
When excited, she can get a little chatty, but calms down quickly.
She loves all people, from young to old. She's been surrounded by small children and stood still and calm, looking very happy while they petted her. So tolerant is Maggie that she allowed her foster mom's 8 year old to dress her up in a t-shirt, shorts and sunglasses (photos available upon request!)
Maggie can be territorial when it comes to other dogs approaching either
her food or her crate. She only has a problem with the resident cat if
it growls at her. Maggie will then growl back, and sometimes chase it.
But if the cat is polite, Maggie is polite in return.
She does not mind being crated, but is perfectly fine in the home
without it. In fact, other than one of the children's beds that she
enjoys, she has never jumped up on any other furniture. Although she has
learned to sit and stay at the door, a fenced yard is a necessity for
Maggie, as she has a tendency to shoot out the door when it is opened.
A bit surprising for a collie, Maggie likes water. On a camping trip,
she went into the water up to her belly, and even put her face
underwater to pick up large rocks. And although she has no interest in
chasing a ball or a stick, she really wanted to chase rocks that were
being thrown into the pond.
One of Maggie's favorite past-times is keeping an eye on the resident
hamster. She will stare at it for about 15 minutes, then walk away until
the next time she decides it needs minding.
Maggie is a very polite, calm dog, who will get excited when her
"people" come home, but then calm again quickly. Maggie would be happy
as an only dog, and although she is getting socialization training with
her foster siblings, if her new family had pets, it would need to be
pre-determined that all were compatible.
With each passing day, Maggie is becoming more secure and her behavior
is reflective of this. She is a lovely lass, full of spirit and
intelligence, who will be happy to find a home to call her own.
Maggie is being fostered near Milwaukee, WI.
