Update on Lady – May 6, 2006!
Lady is feeling healthy, strong and happy. Her kennel cough is completely gone, and she has visited the vet to get up to date on all her vaccinations. She has also been introduced to the other collies at her foster home, and she has let them know that she is “large and in charge!” Lady is a benevolent dictator, however, and when she wants to make a point, she simply rests her chin on the other collie’s back. No snapping, no snarling, just a gentle reminder of who runs the show.
Lady’s visit to the groomers wasn’t the happy experience that she could have hoped for. Apparently, Lady doesn’t really enjoy grooming. She will tolerate it for brief periods (longer if she is given a raw hide chew to distract her), but extended sessions are not acceptable. She does love it when her foster mom uses the Zoom Groom on her: a grooming tool that feels like a doggie massage, while removing excess undercoat. Her foster mom has promised to send a brand new Zoom Groom with her when Lady goes to her forever home.
After she regained her health and became more comfortable in her surroundings, Lady found her voice: a deep, commanding bark which would make any burglar think twice. In fact, her foster mom says that she feels very secure with Lady on guard. During a recent storm, a particularly loud thunder boom sent Lady rushing to the front door, barking to drive off the "intruder." In general, she barks less than the other collies, usually only when she wants to chime in with the others or if she feels her family is being threatened.
Lady is a very special girl and she is now ready for a very special forever home. Her gentle, easy going nature would make her a wonderful addition to almost any family that wants a loving collie and has lots of love to give in return.
New to Rescue!
Lady is a beautiful, seven year old, tri-colored, collie girl who was found as a stray and came to MWCR from a shelter in Wisconsin. She has been spayed and is a big girl (69 pounds), though not overweight. This lady is a real lover and can’t get enough of her foster mom’s love and attention.
Lady is well mannered, house trained and almost never barks. She walks well on a leash, knows the basic commands and happily comes when her name is called. She enjoys exploring the yard at her foster home, but like the fine lady that she is, she doesn’t like getting her feet wet on the crusty snow at this northern Minnesota location.
In the past, Lady must have experienced some trauma to her right eye, because the vet says she has lost the vision there. Her left eye is beautiful, healthy and functioning perfectly. The loss of vision in her right eye has had no effect on Lady’s ability to get around and investigate her environment, though she is sometimes startled when approached from the right side. Fortunately, she is such a gentle, sweet natured girl that she reacts with only a quick bark, as if to say “Hey, where did you come from?”
Lady has not yet been introduced to the other collie members of her foster home, due to a mild case of kennel cough for which she is receiving a round of antibiotics. However, she knows there are other collies in the house and is excited to meet them. She is also looking forward to a “day of beauty” at the doggie salon where they will return her beautiful coat to its full glory.
For now, Lady is settling in and enjoying her new, foster home. She loves tummy rubs, her comfy bed, lots of toys and soft music; and she shows her appreciation with lots of collie kisses. Watch for updates as Lady gets ready for her forever home.
Lady is being fostered in Esko, Minnesota (near Duluth).
