Description:
“I’m special.”
Casper is special in many ways. First, he is what is known as a double merle, smooth coated collie. He has the typical, blue merle markings on his head and at the base of his tail, but otherwise he is almost totally white. Double merles are also special in that they usually have hearing and vision problems, and Casper is no exception. He is completely deaf and also has some visual impairment. Bright sunlight and darkness seem to give him the most difficulty.
Although he can’t hear, Casper has had no trouble sizing up his foster home. He could tell instantly that foster mom was a pushover. Foster dad, however, seemed to have some reservations about adding another dog to the household, so Casper immediately began to buddy up to him. Casper has also spent some time working out the pack order with the other dogs at his foster home. There have been a few tiffs, but Casper is not aggressive and most of the disagreements have been caused by the other dogs startling Casper because he couldn’t hear them coming. He is intrigued by the kitties and would love to treat them like little, fluffy sheep that need to be herded. These cats are pretty dog savvy, however, and know that if you don’t run, no one can chase you! When one of the more collie friendly cats rubs up against Casper, he is totally perplexed and looks at the cat as if to say, “What a strange little sheep you are!” He would far rather use his long, collie nose to goose the kitties into motion, although the result of that move is usually a few quick swats from an outraged kitty paw. All in all, Casper has developed a mutually amicable relationship with everyone at his foster home.
Casper is 6 years old and he is a big boy at 86 pounds. He doesn’t know any commands, but his foster mom is working on teaching him some hand signals. He is also working on his housetraining and is crated during those times that he has to be left alone. Not surprisingly, he is nervous in unfamiliar surroundings and situations, and he doesn’t care for car rides. Because he can’t hear, Casper can be easily startled, and for this reason his forever home should not include young children. He is not a particularly vocal collie, although he will sometimes bark when startled or when the other dogs bark.
Casper is a special boy who is looking for a special, forever home. Because he can’t hear danger coming, he will need a fenced yard or will need to be on a leash at all times. He is a sweet, loving collie who likes to keep his family constantly in his sight. A family that has experience with deaf or blind dogs would be a huge advantage. Most importantly, Casper needs a family who will love him for the wonderful and unique boy that he is.
