New to Rescue!
Good time Charlie loves everyone he meets. This happy-go-lucky boy considers everyone a potential buddy and playmate, and the prior injury to his eye makes him look like he has a cheerful, mischievous wink for friends and strangers alike. His injury was the result of being kicked by a horse before coming to MWCR and his eye could not be saved, but Charlie, couldn’t care less. In fact, he thinks it gives him a mysterious quality that the lady dogs find irresistible. It doesn’t affect his ability to run, play, chase or generally enjoy life, and is not expected to have any effect on his health or require any additional treatment.
Charlie is a sweet natured fellow who has been a delightful house guest at his foster home. He is housetrained when kept in a routine and has not had any accidents while his family is at work. He is also kennel trained and will go there on command, though there is really no need to kennel him since he is not destructive in the house as long as he has toys to keep him busy. He has a good appetite, which is fortunate, since he is on the thin side and needs to put on a few pounds. When he came to MWCR his beautiful coat had been neglected and was matted in several places. However, with some grooming and lots of healthy food, it will soon regain its full, glossy character.
Charlie has not been tested with cats, but he does like to chase small animals in his yard, so he may also chase cats. He is wonderful with the two dogs at his foster home and loves to play with them. He also loves children, but because of his playful exuberance he would probably be too much for toddlers. This same exuberance leads him to jump up on people when he first meets them, but his foster home is working to teach him better manners and he is improving.
Charlie loves his chew toys, but if a toy isn’t available, he is perfectly willing to play with whatever is at hand: his leash, his food dish, his brush, whatever! Charlie rides well in the car and walks fairly well on a leash. He needs to learn not to pull and to control his enthusiasm and excitement when he encounters other dogs or people (or as Charlie calls them: PLAYMATES). He also considers motorcycles and large trucks to be potential playthings and is learning that he should not chase them. He is a typical collie in that he barks when excited, but his foster family is working with him on the “quiet” command.
Charlie is looking for a forever family who likes to have fun! He would love to have another dog or school age children around who would play with him, and he would also enjoy obedience training where he could bond with his family and become a canine good citizen. A fence would be ideal but it isn’t absolutely necessary as long as his family is willing to walk him consistently so he can burn off some of his youthful energy. Charlie will make a wonderful, happy companion for a family that wants a loving, playful collie who will also snuggle up in the evenings and give collie kisses.
Charlie is being fostered in Clive, IA.
