Update on Lassie II, August 24, 2007
Lassie II has been spayed, had her stitches out and is ready for adoption! Also, we've been working with her off leash and she is staying in the back yard (with supervision) and comes immediately when called!
Update on Lassie II, July 17, 2007
Unlike the original Lassie, this one really is a girl! Our Lassie is a beautiful, five year old, sable and white sweetheart, who weighs only 43 pounds. She is a petite little thing, but is also strong, active and healthy with a tail that is constantly on the wag. Lassie is scheduled to be spayed within the next month, and once she is fully recovered, she will be available to go to her forever home.
Lassie is a sweet natured, happy girl who loves attention and belly rubs. She likes to play fetch with her soft toys but when no one is interested in a game, she just carries them around for company. She is excellent with other dogs, playful and non-aggressive, although she does want to be the dominant female. There are no young children in her foster home, so it is not known how Lassie is around little ones. She has a mixed record with cats, and if she were to be adopted by a family with felines, she would need some careful supervision until she and the cats worked out their differences.
Lassie is almost as smart as her television counterpart. She learns quickly and already knows a variety of commands including: sit, lie down, shake, come, no and down. It took her no time to learn which parts of her foster home are off limits to her, although when no one is looking, she will still occasionally sneak up on the couch. Lassie likes to be brushed and tolerates bathing. She is crate trained and can be left for extended periods, though neighbors report that she does whine and bark sometimes. This is minimized if there is another dog in the house to keep her company. She is very well mannered on a leash, but when off leash she has been known to run, so a home with a fenced yard is highly recommended.
Lassie is both friendly and affectionate, but she will bark loudly to announce visitors when the doorbell rings. Once the visitors are admitted, however, Lassie is the perfect little lady, never jumping up or acting aggressively.
Lassie is looking for a busy, active household where she will get the affection and attention that she craves. She would enjoy having another dog and older kids to play with, or adults who will take her for walks, play fetch and teach her new things. In return, Lassie will shower her new family with love, loyalty and a constantly wagging tail.
New to Rescue!
Lassie is a five year old, petite (but solid) sable and white female, who is very family oriented. Always alert, Lassie will bark at people walking by her house, or sometimes at people IN her house if they are strangers that she is assessing as to their reason for being there, until she is satisfied that all is under control. Gentle teaching of when it is appropriate to bark, and when barking is not warranted will effectively control Lassie's talkativeness, as of course she is very smart, and just needs to learn what is expected of her. Once comfortable in a routine, she does not display excessive vocalizations, but in strange or unusual situations, her attempts to control these situations are made by collie-talking.
Great with children, Lassie appears to also have a soft spot for men, and displays a great sensitivity for anyone not feeling well - she will be the first one there to offer a healing lick and kiss.
Lassie must always be kept on a leash while not in a fenced yard, as she would like to run if given the chance. Petting and cuddling elicit appreciative moans and groans, and Lassie is a whiz at all her basic obedience commands. A few added plusses are that she loves to fetch, is very well behaved in the car, and will go anywhere as long as she gets to stay with the family. She is great with cats and other dogs as well, although with her penchant for wanting to be in control, she might enjoy spending any additional doggy-time with a non-dominant doggie friend.
Lassie is very well house-trained, and has never been crated, to her foster-mom's knowledge and she is fine in the house all day. This lass of a lady is accustomed to lounging on the furniture. Having a good view outside from all the doors and windows so that she can keep an eye on all the goings-on in the world keeps this alert girl perky and interested in world events. Once settled and secure into her new routine and life, with a few loving lessons regarding when to talk and when not to talk, this little Lassie will bring much joy to her new family.
Lassie II is being fostered in Cottage Grove WI (near Madison).
