#2451 – Ronan, FKA Maverick

3-5-year-old sable and white male

New to Rescue!

Named for the famous tenor, Ronan Tynan, our Ronan is a collie with a special gift for music and a propensity to sing along with his humans in a high pitched, collie voice. After Ronan’s foster mom picked him up at the shelter in Iowa, the two sang their way back to his new foster home.

Prior to coming to MWCR Ronan had had little to sing about. Found as a stray, he was extremely thin and his coat was dirty and matted. It was necessary to clip him down, and he will need to add another 20 pounds to his slim, 46 pound body. This is being done with supplements and a special prescription diet that will help him gain weight slowly and safely. Once he has filled out and his coat grows back, Ronan will once again be a stunning, collie boy. He has been thoroughly vetted and has tested negative for heartworm, parasites and tick related illnesses, so in spite of his slim physique, Ronan is a healthy boy.

Ronan’s foster home includes three other dogs and four cats, all of whom get along well with him. He loves to play with the other dogs and has a sweet, non-intrusive manner that is much appreciated by the kitties. He has also met lots of dogs around his neighborhood and at the dog park and is a favorite with all. He is gentle and affectionate with children of all ages and approaches strangers, both young and old, with a calm request for attention. He is so well mannered on a leash that his foster mom has christened him “One Finger” because that is all that is needed to walk him.

In addition to his musical talents, Ronan is also an extremely intelligent dog who has obviously had a good deal of obedience training. He knows many commands including: sit, down, wait, stay, shake with both paws, come, leave it, drop it, no, and go potty. He is perfectly house trained and will “go potty” on command in the same spot in the yard. Like the famous Lassie, Ronan will look into his person’s eyes and vocalize if there is something wrong or if he doesn’t feel well: then it is up to the human to listen and respond. Since coming to his foster home, he has been the perfect house guest, well mannered, cheerful and affectionate.

After a walk or a trip to the park, this lanky, loving, collie boy settles right in for his couch potato time. Ronan loves to curl up on his dog bed or snuggle next to his person in companionable silence. He is a quiet boy in the house, seldom barking, even when the other dogs are talking to passing neighbors or warning off the wild turkeys from a nearby nature preserve.

Ronan is so well behaved and trained that it is obvious he was once a member of a loving family, and both the shelter and his foster mom have done extensive searches to find his previous home. However, since his former family cannot be found, Ronan is ready to bestow his talents on a wonderful, new, forever home. His new family could include men, women, children, other dogs and even cats. Although his foster home has a fenced yard, Ronan has excellent recall and could probably be perimeter trained to an unfenced property in the right environment. Dogs like Ronan don’t come along often and the lucky family who adopts him will be singing his praises for a lifetime.

Ronan is being fostered in Madison, WI.
