Description: Just look at the character in that face! Bert has big, wistful, bedroom eyes and one ear that flops off to the side, giving him a sweet, playful, slightly quizzical look. At only five months old, Bert weighs about 38 pounds, but has long, colt-like legs that he will eventually grow into. He is a happy, healthy, playful pup who has already been neutered and is ready for his forever home.

Although he is still very much a puppy, Bert has outgrown much of the destructive behavior typical of younger pups. He likes to chew on his toys but has not chewed anything inappropriate at his foster home. He hasn’t been crated, but is very good about going into a small bathroom at night that has been designated as his sleeping quarters. He is very smart and has learned to “sit” on command and is working on “come,” “stay” and “down.” He is already house trained and has had only one accident (when his foster mom failed to take him outside after a meal).

Bert is a friendly, playful, little guy who loves everyone he meets. He likes children, but because he is still young, he might play too roughly for toddlers. He would be great with older children who will throw a ball for him. Bert is also good with other dogs and has great fun rough-housing with his collie foster brothers, though when the other dogs don’t want to play, he is good about leaving them alone. He is fascinated by the cats at his foster home, and though he wouldn’t hurt them, he does want to chase and play with them. The cats have occasionally swatted him, but Bert just considers this part of the game.

Bert is a fairly quiet boy who primarily barks only when he is engaged in rough and tumble play with his foster brother. He likes to go for car rides and is learning to walk nicely on a leash. He is willing to let his foster brother take the lead and only pulls when he is tempted by another dog or a pushy squirrel. One of Bert’s favorite pastimes involves carrying his foster dad’s slippers around the house. He doesn’t chew them, just walks around with one in his mouth and occasionally hauls other items of clothing (socks, t-shirts, etc.) into the living room and dumps them.

Bert is a smart, easy going, lovable little guy who will fit well into most households. He has shown no desire to assume the alpha status, so he would be a great companion for another large dog. He still gets excited and may play too roughly for a very small dog or very young children. He would probably be all right with dog-savvy cats, but if they run, he will chase. Because he is still a puppy, Bert would love to find a family that would work with him on learning manners and help him grow into a well trained, canine good citizen. The process will help Bert to bond with his new, forever family and should be a snap with such a clever, eager-to-please pup.
