Description: Two weeks ago a sad, frightened, sick, little collie arrived at his MWCR foster home. He had lived his entire life outdoors, fighting to stay alive on a diet of substandard dog food and stale bread. He was so thin (15 to 20 pounds under weight) that the vet felt he was too fragile to be neutered.

Well, what a difference two weeks can make. Bingo is gaining weight and showing off his playful, affectionate personality. He loves to play with the other dogs at his foster home and is curious but respectful of the kitties. He especially likes to watch them sleeping on the heat register. He also loves the human boys at his foster home and just eats up the attention he gets from them and their friends. He does have a strong herding instinct, so he will probably do best with older children, since he tends to try to “organize” the younger ones. Bingo is a little shy with new people and definitely prefers women to men, though given a little time he warms up to everyone.

Not surprisingly, Bingo has shown some food aggression toward other dogs. When you have to compete for every bite of stale bread, you learn to take whatever you can get. His foster mom feeds him separately from the other dogs and then everything is fine. He is a tall, lanky boy whose long legs and long collie nose enable him to sniff out any tasty treats that are left on the kitchen counters, so his foster mom has learned that the best place to store food is inside the microwave. Bingo is working on correcting his counter-surfing, but when you have lived hungry, it is a hard habit to break.

Bingo’s owner said he was 11 months old, but the vet thinks he is closer to 3 years. Whichever is right, Bingo has shown himself to be a smart, eager to please collie. In spite of having been an outdoor dog, he learned his house training in record time and is working on other basic commands. He is highly food motivated and once he realizes that a treat is involved, you will have his undivided attention.

Bingo loves being an indoor dog. One time when the gate was accidentally left open and the other dogs rushed out, Bingo rushed right back in. He looked at the others as if to say, “You guys would have to be nuts to leave a great place like this!”

Now that Bingo is gaining weight and beginning to thrive, he will soon be making that trip to the vet for neutering. This means that some time after Christmas he will be ready for his forever home. What a wonderful Christmas present this loving, sweet natured collie would make! Just wrap up a small, stuffed collie for under the tree, and then, welcome the real thing into your home for the New Year. Bingo will enrich the lives of his forever family for many new years to come.
