Post-Adoption Update: October 3, 2008 Cole’s forever family reports that he is fitting in beautifully and that they are having a wonderful time with him. He is quickly adjusting to his new home and neighborhood and has become a loving part of the family. He is doing well with the children and though he sometimes gets excited, he is generally very gentle and particularly careful around the family’s one year old. Cole is home!

Description: Long and lean, this handsome boy looks more like a colt than a Cole, but regardless of what you call him, he is a real sweetheart. Cole came to MWCR from a shelter where he was taken after having been found as a stray. His foster family believes that he was probably an outdoor dog who never got much in the way of care and attention. He absolutely loves people and craves all the affection that he can get. He likes other dogs, but sometimes gets into snits with them if he feels that they are getting more petting than he is. He also loves to play with stuffed toys. It is obvious, however, that until recently he had never encountered one that included a squeaker, because the first time his foster dad “squeaked” a toy at him, Cole ran and hid. Even now, if he is chewing a toy and accidentally makes it squeak, he immediately drops it and backs away, staring at it as if his beloved stuffed toy had become possessed by some sort of demon!

Cole was originally estimated to be about four years old, but his lovely white teeth and puppyish behavior have convinced his foster dad that he is closer to two. His yearning for affection often causes him to jump up on people, and he needs to work on improving his manners. He has a very highly developed desire to please, however, so it should be easy to teach him to be a responsible canine citizen. Cole would be a wonderful candidate for obedience training and such training would be a great way for him to bond with his forever family. He has basically mastered his housetraining skills, but since he has not yet been neutered, he still does some marking. This has been exacerbated by the fact that there is another un-neutered male collie in his foster home. Cole is scheduled to be neutered next week and his marking is expected to resolve once the testosterone is out of his system.

Cole loves everyone he meets: adults, children, dogs, cats, everyone! He loves to run and chase with the other dogs, and his foster dad says he is as fast as a deer, in spite of a slightly crooked back leg (perhaps the result of a previously broken bone). He has shown some food aggression with the other dogs, so it is best to feed him separately. Cole doesn’t bark much for a collie and has shown no desire to chase cars or trucks.

Cole is looking for a forever family that will lavish him with the love and attention that was missing for the first years of his life. He still has lots of puppy in him, so it would be ideal if his new family would spend some time helping this eager pupil to improve his manners. He would do well in an active home that would include Cole in their activities, and though he enjoys the company of other dogs, he would also be fine as an only dog who gets to soak up all the attention. There may be a few rough edges on this young boy, but with just a little polish, he will sparkle like a diamond.
