Well, Dakota has made that fateful vet trip that all collie boys dread! That’s right, he has had the “big snip.” He still does some occasional marking but we are hopeful that that will disappear once all the collie testosterone is out of his system.

Dakota continues to make progress in his foster home. After a lifetime outdoors, many things are still new to him and he will need continuing work on his social interaction with other dogs. He can be food aggressive, so it is important that he be fed separately from his canine buddies. He has been cat tested and is definitely good with kitties.

Now that he has been neutered, Dakota is ready to find his forever home. He is looking for a family that will continue his education and help him become the shining example of canine good behavior that he is striving to become.

Description:
Dakota is a beautiful, three year old, diamond in the rough. Before coming to MWCR he had lived his entire life in a kennel in a barn. He had had little or no socialization, and was extremely frightened and confused when he first arrived at his foster home. He instantly gravitated to the resident Collie and seemed to rely on him for comfort and direction. It was a new and strange world for Dakota.

But in a very short time, Dakota has come to realize that his foster mom is pretty wonderful and that living in a house has some definite benefits! Lots of things are still strange to Dakota and having never had any training or boundaries, he has lots to learn, but he is an extremely smart, eager to please boy. His foster mom is working with him, teaching him what is and what is not appropriate behavior. Dakota has not yet been neutered, but that will be done shortly.

Although initially shy, once Dakota learns that a new person is his friend, he is an extremely loving Collie boy. He enjoys carrying around his foster mom’s shoes, and likes to sleep with his little pink tongue sticking out. He dearly loves the other Collie at his foster home, and a non-dominant, canine friend would be very helpful to Dakota when he goes to his forever home. He instinctively looks to the other dog for reassurance and guidance when he is confronted with new and frightening experiences. Dakota rarely barks, accepts grooming well and has not been destructive in his foster home. He will probably need a home that doesn’t include young, exuberant children, but would most likely be fine with quiet, older, respectful ones.

Dakota is looking for a forever home where they will work with him while he learns what it means to be part of a loving family. He will need a fenced yard, since he may run off if given free rein, and he would love to have another doggie friend to help him learn the ropes. This lovable boy has already made great strides and only needs a little more “polish” to become the glittering Collie diamond that he was meant to be.
