Description:
Kolby is one laid back Collie. According to his foster mom, if you can live happily with a three year old child, a set of four year old twins, a pushy Collie sibling and an “annoying” pug, you must be laid back. Kolby would also be okay with cats since he paid no attention to the barn cats that he was exposed to. He is not food aggressive with the other dogs, but if he sees one of the others near his food, he will go over and lay on the food dish! He is good with the children, though he would probably like to herd them if the other Collie would allow it. His favorite person is his foster mom, and he follows her around the house and will cry when she leaves the room.
Kolby is a big boy at 80 pounds, but his vet says that he is not overweight. He is in good health, though he does have some misaligned teeth that will require regular dental care and might need to be corrected some day. He also has a wrist that hyperextends and because of this he should not be allowed to jump out of cars or off of furniture. Fortunately, Kolby is good about staying off of the furniture and is happy to sleep on his doggie bed.
Kolby tolerates grooming, is perfectly house trained and can be trusted alone in the house as long as any tasty treats are put away or out of his reach. He knows several commands including: “sit,” “speak,” “stay,” “lie down,” “come,” “go potty” and “off.” When it suits him, he will develop a case of selective hearing, so it is important that you have his attention before issuing any commands. Kolby walks well on a leash and likes to go for leisurely strolls. He also rides very well in the car.
Kolby’s foster family is working with him regarding his desire to bark more than is acceptable. His forever family will have to continue to work with him on this behavior and he would probably not do well in an apartment setting. Fortunately, he is quiet at night. Every night he will settle down on his doggie bed and give a loud moan of contentment, just before he nods off. He sleeps in the room with his foster mom and gets up several times per night to make sure that she is okay and hasn’t slipped out while he was sleeping.
Kolby is looking for a forever home that could include children, other dogs or cats. A fenced yard would be desirable, since his selective hearing sometimes gets in the way of his recall. Because he likes to bark, he will need a family that is patient and will continue to work with him. In exchange for a little patient training, Kolby’s new family will be rewarded with a sweet-natured, laid back, loving guy who will be your friend for life.
