Post-Adoption update: October 15, 2008
Lady is simply adorable! She was good as gold on the long car ride to Cedar Creek, sitting pretty between our seats with nearly constant petting by both of us. And with Chuck singing to her and sharing an occasional french fry, she was especially enamored with him.
I wish you could have been here when we arrived home. The first critter to greet Lady was our cat, the utterly fearless Princess Sluggo who stepped right up to introduce herself. The two of them sniffed noses; the cat rubbed against the dog's ankle and purred and Lady wagged. We couldn't have been off to a better start.
I took Lady for a walk on leash into the garden. She sniffed around, found the water fountain and got a drink and piddled here and there seemingly very interested in the place and quite liking it. Then Chuck brought Dashiell to the garden gate and let him off leash. I wish I'd had a video camera after that; it was like a scene from a classic romance movie. From opposite sides of the garden, Lady and Dashiell caught sight of each other and froze -- ears up, tails up, fur standing on end. I called Dashiell to come and he raced across the garden, fur flying. I held onto Lady, keeping her on leash, just in case. The instant they met, they were happy faced and waggy tailed as if they'd always been best friends and long lost loves. After exchanging brief and customary sniffings and seeing that all was well, I let Lady off of her leash. The two dogs followed each other around the garden, sniffing and piddling in turn, getting drinks, wagging all the while. And being followed around by the cat who, I'm beginning to believe, thinks she's another dog.
After we were satisfied that, surely, their bladders had to be empty, we put them back on leash and led them both into the house. As hoped and expected, Dashiell was a perfect gentleman and Lady was impeccably well mannered. They quickly settled in for the evening with Dashiell assuming his favorite spot on the rug and with Lady preferring to stretch out on the cool bare floor that Dashiell doesn't care to even walk on. Glad to have at least one dog who appreciates my hand-painted faux stone floors!
At bedtime, Dashiell took his place on the carpet on Chuck's side of the bed. Lady came along and nosed inquisitively upon the covers. When invited to "Come on up," she eagerly hopped onto the bed and nestled between us for praise and pets and rubs. Both dogs woke happy to see each other and anxious to go play in the garden. We took them out for a romp. First Dashiell chased Lady around in a circle and then they reversed with Lady chasing Dashiell around in a circle. We've never been able to figure out the rules of this game but, they apparently understand how it's played and both act like the winner when it's over.
As we have a shortage of big, noisy trucks around here, Lady has discovered something else to bark at: the occasional big, noisy power boat speeding past our lakeside deck. She's just thrilled at the sound of them and we encourage her to bark saying, "Good girl! You tell 'em you live here!" This will not happen very often since, even on the busiest 4th of July we may see no more than a dozen boats all day. So she'll only get to bark up a storm once or twice on any other given day and rarely at all in winter.
She and Dashiell are enjoying chasing squirrels off the deck. Lady has been given a soft rubber ball that she can play with in the house. This just delighted her, perhaps all the more so because Dashiell has no interest in any kind of toy, not even a ball, so Lady can have it all to herself without even having to share. She is just as sweet and cute as can be happily bouncing that ball around the living room.
Right now, the two dogs are sharing one small rug together, sound asleep. But earlier today, after they'd both licked their breakfast bowls clean, they got to sit for treats in the kitchen while I took their photo. Here they are, two angels in dogsuits....
Chuck and I are so delighted to have adopted Lady into our little family. No regrets, for sure! Thank you for taking such good care of our girl while we were searching to find her. She seems to be very much at home and happy to be here with us, her new boyfriend and even her new cat for playmates.
We'll keep in touch.
Amy
Description:
Lady's name couldn't be more descriptive! This beautiful, quiet, friendly, well-behaved 4 yr. old tri colored rough collie truly is a genteel little lady. She is mellow, not much of a barker, never destructive and perfectly housebroken. She eats well, rides well in a car, likes to be brushed and is just about perfect! Lady's one pet peeve seems to be noisy trucks, as she will bark to alert other dogs of their approach and she also tries to run toward them as they pass by. For this reason, she needs to be kept on a leash if her forever home does not have a fenced yard.
Lady also displays good manners around children. While she loves them and wants attention from them, she does not jump or get overly excited when interacting although she has been known to plant a big juicy kiss on kids who move close to her face.
Sometimes playful, Lady loves to roll in the yard. Wriggling from side-to-side with her feet in the air, Lady looks like she is doing her daily workout. She holds the other dogs in her foster home to the same high standards by which she abides. While never aggressive, with a low growl or stern look she will gently but firmly put the other dogs in her foster home in their places when they misbehave.
Lady came to MWCR from a shelter in Missouri, where her prior owner had taken her for reasons unknown. Surprisingly given her good behavior, Lady does not seem to know many commands. Her foster mom taught her to sit and shake; it's recommended that her new owner continue her training. In addition to children, Lady gets along with cats and other dogs. While she would fit in well almost anywhere, Lady's ideal forever home would be a quiet one where this dignified, laid back little lady will be the ideal companion.
