Post-Adoption Update: September 15, 2008
A match made in heaven! That’s the best way to describe the relationship between Lilly and her new foster family. Lilly’s playful nature has helped the resident dog at her new home discover its “doggie” side. Tutti, the resident dog, has always been something of a princess, but since the arrival of Lilly, Tutti has learned to run, chase, play and even bark. The two dogs chase each other for hours, alternating roles about who plays the dog and who plays the sheep.
In exchange, Tutti and her mom are teaching Lilly that it is okay to love and trust humans. Lilly was always a bit wary of new people, but in only a few short weeks she has bonded with her forever mom and competes with Tutti about who should get the most attention and petting.
Lilly’s mom is working with her to make sure that she learns good manners and controls her enthusiasm. Once Lilly has mastered her lessons, she will be allowed to go with mom to her workplace.
Description:
What a tiny little flower Lilly is! Although she is fully grown, she weighs only 21 pounds. Her foster mom thinks she may actually be a purebred sheltie, but it is also possible that she is a sheltie/collie mix. In any event, she is a lovely, delicate little girl who attracts attention where ever she goes.
Lilly has almost no hearing and is also visually impaired. Loud, sharp noises will startle her, so she is not completely deaf. She sees well enough to run and play with the other dogs at her foster home, though she does have trouble climbing more than a few stairs. Many people are concerned about adopting a dog with hearing and vision problems, but in almost all ways, Lilly is a normal little girl. She is extremely playful and loves to rough house with other dogs, as her l-1/2 year old foster brother Kirby will attest. When Lilly wants to play and Kirby isn’t cooperating, Lilly will grab his tail and tug on it like a pull toy until he gives in!
Lilly is a fun loving, easy going girl who has adapted very quickly to her foster home. She was not house trained when she arrived, but is doing very well now with crate training and a regular schedule. She enjoys brushing, rides well in the car and walks nicely on her leash. Lilly doesn’t know any commands at this time, but many hearing impaired dogs are easily trained to respond to hand signals. She will need a forever home with a fenced yard, because she cannot hear and respond when she is called.
Lilly is cheerful and affectionate with everyone she meets. She is friendly with strangers, loves other dogs, and completely ignores cats and the menagerie of other animals (rabbits, birds, goats, chickens, doves, turtle, etc.) at her foster home. She would enjoy playing with children, but the kids would need to be old enough to understand her deafness and take care not to startle her.
Lilly is waiting for a forever family that is willing to look beyond her modest limitations and see the unlimited potential in this happy little collie. She would love to have another playful dog for company and a fenced yard to play in. She would also enjoy learning commands via hand signals and showing her new family how clever and eager to please she is. In exchange for just a little extra care, Lilly will provide her new family with a lifetime of love. |
