Description: Those of us who work in rescue are all too familiar with the results of animal abuse and neglect. But no amount of experience could prepare us for the shocking neglect that had been experienced by little Peggie. When she came to us from the shelter, she had already been shaved because her coat was not only matted but actually moldy, causing numerous skin infections! With her fur gone, it became obvious that this dainty girl was more than just malnourished, she was positively starving. One volunteer described her as looking like a holocaust survivor. Peggy was also missing her right front leg, and the shelter had been told that the leg had been chewed off by Peggie’s mother when she was a pup.

And yet, like so many abused and neglected animals, Peggie’s spirit remains joyful. She loves everyone she meets: adults, children, cats and other dogs. She craves affection and human contact and actively seeks out hugs and kisses. She likes being close to her people and though she is initially hesitant with strange men, she warms up quickly.

Peggie is almost two years old, and though she is energetic, she is not hyperactive. She loves to play herding games with the other dogs at her foster home and even though she is the smallest of the dogs, her male foster brothers respect her wishes.

Peggie’s return to health is being carefully monitored. Her skin infections are healing quickly now that the moldy fur is gone, and she is on a healthy program to gain weight. Her fur is beginning to grow back and she will soon be the pretty little girl that she was meant to be. Peggie has not been spayed, but that surgery will be done as soon as she is healthy enough to tolerate it. She is able to run and play, but because of her missing leg, she can’t walk long distances or over uneven terrain. She can only handle two or three stairs. MWCR is having Peggie evaluated to see if she is a good candidate for a doggy prosthesis. Because she is so young, we feel that a prosthetic leg would significantly add to her quality of life.

Now that she is in a loving environment, the light has returned to Peggie’s eyes. It will take time for her to fully regain her health, but there is remarkable strength and courage in her tiny body. Please check back for updates on Peggie’s recovery, and if you able to make a contribution to help with her expenses, Peggie and MWCR would be very grateful.
