Update: May 29, 2009 Cortez continues to make progress as he strives to become a happy, more self confident collie. He has been at his foster home for two months now and is finally seeking out his foster mom for petting and affection. He is more comfortable with her than with his foster dad, in part because it is mom who feeds him. Although he is still a little cautious about toys and treats, he greets his foster mom in the morning with a nudge from his long collie nose and some tugging on the bedclothes as if to say, “Hey, get up. It’s time to take me out.”

Cortez is a sweet collie who wants very much to love and be loved, but whose past experiences have taught him that humans can’t always be trusted to provide that love. He is looking for a forever family that understands this and is willing to be patient with him and let him progress at his own pace. Earning Cortez’s trust is not an easy task, but the best things in life are seldom easy.

Update: April 6, 2009 Cortez has been making steady progress in his foster home and was wagging his tail, accepting affection and learning to walk in and out of the house without fear. Then he went in for his neutering and suffered a mild setback. He seems to be saying, “How can I trust you when you did THAT to me!”

Cortez will definitely need a forever home with a fenced yard, though his foster mom is working with him and teaching him to walk on a leash. He is fearful of having anything put over his head, so right now they are using a harness and only going for “walks” indoors.

Cortez is very gradually learning about living with people and learning to trust. Although he felt understandably betrayed by the neutering experience, his tail is still wagging. Keep checking back for updates.

Description: Cortez is an exceptionally handsome young collie who spent his first eleven months locked in a small space in a barn. He was not handled or socialized. He got no proper food and even less love.

Today he is in a loving foster home learning what it means to be part of a family. He likes other dogs and the resident cat, and every day he is becoming a little more comfortable with his new and improved life.

Cortez is not yet ready for adoption, and when he is ready he will need a dog-savvy adopter who will be patient with him as he learns the ropes. Check back for updates on his progress.
