Description: In fall 2008, a family contacted MWCR about taking in their Collie Marly, who needed a new home because the family was moving to a place where they couldn’t have a large dog.  Marly came to MWCR and quickly found a great new home.  A short time later the family contacted us again and said that although they knew we didn’t rescue steers, they wondered if we might know of someplace for Harvey, their pet steer.  The family was selling the rest of their livestock, but because Harvey is a pet he was not going to be sold, much less end up on the dinner table.  Still, he needed a new home.

Of course MWCR doesn’t have foster homes for steers, but we do have members with lots of contacts.  We posted on our e-mail list about finding a place for Harvey, and almost immediately one of our members said she had a friend with contacts that might work for Harvey.  The place her friend had in mind was in Ohio, not far from where Harvey’s family’s daughter lived.  Since Harvey had been the daughter’s pet steer, she was delighted to hear that Harvey might soon be living nearby.

After the severest of winter weather was over in March 2009, Harvey was loaded into a trailer and transported to his new home in Ohio.  The location is a petting zoo of sorts, and Harvey now has Clydesdale horses as his new friends.  He also has admirers among his former owner’s young students, one of whom drew this picture of Harvey, thinking Harvey may need to shed some weight in his new surroundings.
