A Few Words From Shiloh: March 31, 2009 Hi! I’m Shiloh, and I wanted to add a few comments to what my foster mom said about me. In my first residence (I can’t really call it a home) there were so many dogs that I didn’t get neat things like treats. Now I do and boy, are they fun! When I get a soft chewy treat I don’t eat it right away. Instead, I run around, hopping like a bunny (well it is almost Easter) and tossing my treat in the air. Then I drop it, pick it up and the fun starts all over again. All this makes my foster family laugh and that makes me happy too. It’s sure good to be part of a real home.

Description: Looking at this beautiful collie boy with his soft fur and gorgeous white collar, you would never believe that just a few short weeks ago he was living in conditions that could only be described at nightmarish. Many dogs come to us from situations that are less than optimal, but Shiloh’s story was so grim that it made the news.

Police were summoned to a home in Nebraska because of a reported dog bite incident. What they found were two children, 21 dogs and numerous cats and other animals living in incredible conditions of filth and neglect. The home owners were charged with child abuse/neglect and animal cruelty; and one of the dogs, Shiloh, came to MWCR.

Today, Shiloh is a happy, well cared for, loving collie boy. He still needs to gain a few pounds, but otherwise he has completely recovered from his previous life. He is fully housetrained and can be left unsupervised in the house as long as he has a canine companion. He knows several commands including “sit,” “lie down” and “come.” He walks well on a leash (aside from a bit of occasional pulling) and likes to go for car rides.

Obviously, Shiloh is used to having lots of other animals around him. He is fine with cats and other dogs, and has shown no signs of aggression. In fact, if another dog wants his food or treats, he only needs to stare at him and he will submissively walk away. He is a gentle, gentle boy who is just thrilled and grateful to be living in a clean, loving home. He loves to be near people and will whimper if he can’t be with his family or canine friends. There are no children at his foster home, but there were children in his previous environment, and Shiloh’s foster mom believes that he would be fine with respectful children.

Shiloh is not a “chatty” collie, though he will bark if he is excited or when the other dogs are urging him to chime in. He will need a fenced yard, since he wants to chase cars and bikes. When he meets new people, he likes to jump up and greet them, but he is learning that that is not appropriate behavior. Having lived with so many animals, Shiloh will need a doggie companion in his forever home.

One of the lessons we can all learn from animals is that we need to “live in the moment.” Shiloh has turned his back on the misery of his past and is living happily in the moment. He is ready for his forever home and ready to live the life of a loving and much-loved family member.
