Pawsonality for May 2010!!!
Well, hello again, it's me....Topaz (aka Sara which means princess), and I am the Pawsonality for the merry month of May! You know what they say, 'April Showers bring May Flowers' so that must make me the May Flower!

Like my brother Sandy, I am a smooth collie which means I too have a summer hair-do rather than that silly mop of fur you can't do anything with! So, with my military-'do' you can call me GI-Topaz (or GI-Sara), ready to march with you to the ends of the earth!

Another indication of my military training is that my foster brother, Dugan, is a master strategist. He plans some very clever and devious missions, and I am a full participant in any successful plots that he executes. What a team we make! He is the general, and I am his Lieutenant!

When I first arrived here, I was terrified of the other dogs. My tail was tucked tightly between my legs and my fear made me very snarky when any of my foster brothers approached. You see, I was raised with a bunch of other dogs and had very little socialization. It had been kind of a dog-eat-dog upbringing, and I wasn't happy to see a bunch of dogs at my foster home. However, I have come to realize that they just wanted to be friends and were actually trying to teach me the ropes of this household. It was just a matter of learning the pecking order, and once I figured that out I fit in beautifully. Now, my tail is held high and happily waving.

To further illustrate just how far I have come, let me tell you I absolutely love playing with Dugan! Not only is he teaching me clever military strategies like tug, keep-away, chase, and wrestling, but also we are exploring the great outdoors together. At first I only liked to go outside to do my business, but now I am really learning that it is also a great testing ground to practice our military maneuvers. I would be perfect for reconnaissance missions, as I am quiet as a mouse and only break my silence when confronted with the vacuum. I also disembowel our stuffed 'prisoners' with ease, so you can see that my military future is bright!

Unlike my brother, I am not just an ordinary sable and white smoothie, I am what is known as a sable-merle. While that means I am a brown-eyed girl, I am also a blue-eyed girl as my left eye is a beautiful shade of ice blue! So, I am representative of both smoky and blue topazes -- a double gem so to speak! That also makes me strikingly beautiful, or so Foster Mom says.

A while back I started blowing my coat ... talk about having a bad hair day! It was more like a bad hair month, I was shedding so badly! But when my warm weather coat came in it was as soft and silky as fine cashmere, and the merle markings were very obvious. According to foster mom (and who am I to argue with a judge?) I have the most delicate collie face, and my conformation is incredible. I am a lady, through and through.

I am very treat-motivated which makes me highly trainable, but I also don't know when to stop eating. Maybe I had to use paw-to-paw combat to fight for my kibble in that dog-eat-dog world, but this means I tend to be food aggressive. It also means I have a tendency to gorge myself, and since I don't want to lose my girlish figure, I am fed separately from the other dogs.

Unlike some dogs, I am such a homebody that I don't really appreciate walks very much, and I don't feel the undying need to sniff around the outside world and claim additional territory. In fact, with proper supervision, I don't need to have a fenced yard. My world revolves around my people, and while I am not a Velcro dog, I will come up to you occasionally to remind you that I haven't been petted lately. I know no strangers, only friends who haven't petted me yet, so when the doorbell rings, don't expect me to bark to tell you what you already know, but you can bet I will be front and center waiting to greet the new arrival!

I am fostered in the Michigan UP, but don't let that put you off. It's a long story, but lots of us smoothies came in at once shortly before Christmas when foster homes were in short supply. That's how I ended up at the ends of the earth. However, my foster family is willing to travel to meet any interested adopters.

I am living proof that evolution is more than a theory, developing as I have from a terrified dog into a love bug who thrives on the attention of people. If you startle me I can still be a bit snarky, but I never bite, so it is just because surprises still scare me a bit. Like any Princess, I love my creature comforts...a couch, a bed, pillows, and thou. No foxhole for this soldier! At night, I love nothing better than to use foster mom's chest for my pillow. If this sounds like someone you could learn to love, please give me a call...I'll be waiting!
