Pawsonality of the Month: March 2010!!!
Hi folks, I’m Willie and I’m the Pawsonality for the month of March. I think they picked me because it's my birthday month. I will be 2 years old on March 23! Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me...! And they may have also picked me for this honor because you know what they say about March – it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. That’s sort of like me. When I first arrived at my foster home, I wasn’t exactly a lion, but I was a bit of a wild child. Some of it was my youth, but most of it was just that I had never been taught manners or given any role models. But that wasn’t the case here. There were two other collies here and they were both so smart and well behaved that it was a little embarrassing. I realized that I needed to pay attention and learn stuff or I would just be the dunce of the class.
One of my first lessons was how to play nicely. You wouldn’t think you would have to work at that, but you do. The other collies didn’t like it when I was jumping on them and chewing on them and bouncing off the walls. It turns out, there’s a whole formula for playing and now I’ve got it down pat. Who knew! I’ve also learned about squeaky toys. The first time I bit down on one and it made that awful sound, I ran and hid! Now I know they are supposed to do that and it’s actually kinda fun to make them squeak. If my collie foster brothers are napping, I can amuse myself by going to the toy box, taking out one toy at a time and tossing it up in the air and catching it. Foster mom and dad call me their “cheap entertainment.” I also entertain them – and myself – by burying my nose in the snow and pushing it along like a collie snow plow. I love winter!
Another thing I’ve learned is that getting groomed isn’t as dreadful as I first thought. I’m much more tolerant of my daily grooming and in February my foster family took me to the doggie spa. They weren’t sure how I would behave, but I made them proud. The groomer said I was a “good ambassador for my breed.” I’m not sure what that means but I know it’s a good thing. After my spa day, I looked so handsome that I couldn’t wait to go for my walk and show off. I just pranced around, head and tail up, showing all the neighbor dogs what a really hunky collie dude I am. I’ve gained weight here and I am now almost 80 pounds of collie muscle.
I’ve learned lots of new stuff from my foster mom and dad too. I listen to them real hard when they talk to me and now I understand almost everything they say. They can tell I’m listening because I watch them really closely and wiggle my ears. I know lots of commands and hand signals. I also know when it’s time to go in my crate for a little down time and how to hop up into the car for a road trip. I’m very well rounded.
Did I mention the cat? When I first came here, I thought the cat was just like the bunnies and squirrels that I see outside. In other words: “fair game.” Now I know that foster mom and dad actually LIKE the cat and that they want me to like him too. I can’t say that I’ve reached that point yet, but I’m making progress.
I find that one of the best parts of education is what comes after you learn something: no, not graduation - treats! At first I would snap them up, but the other dogs told me you have to be gentle, so I am. In fact, I’ve invented a whole new way to take treats. I stick out my tongue and wait for foster mom to put the treat on it. Yum!
Well, that’s me – Willie. Now that I’ve learned to be a model collie, foster mom and dad say I’m ready for my forever home. I’m excited about that because I want to have my very own people to love and who will love me. I may have come to my foster home like a “lion” but when I leave I will go out like a “lamb.” Okay, not exactly a lamb – what collie wants to act like a sheep – but like the handsome, well educated, collie gentleman that I have become! What a special birthday present that would be! A forever home of my very own! Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday to me!
