Description: For poor Stewie, it was a case of going from the frying pan into the fire. As a stray wandering around northern Wisconsin in winter, he had had a pretty rough time. He was cold, lonely and always hungry. His nose carried the scars of past run-ins with barbed wire fences and other hungry dogs. So when he was picked up and taken to a shelter, Stewie must have thought that his luck had changed. But like too many shelters, this one had too many dogs and not enough room, and Stewie’s time was very limited. If he wasn’t adopted quickly, he would be euthanized!

Then someone at the shelter contacted Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue, and Stewie was transported to a loving foster home and a new way of life. This time his luck really had changed. Suddenly his world was filled with plenty of good food, a soft bed, a warm place to sleep, and most importantly – love.

His foster dad was curious about Stewie’s ancestry, since he didn’t look like one of those Hollywood collies, and some research soon confirmed that he looks exactly like an “American Working Farm Collie.” This noble breed of dogs is descended from Scottish Collies that were brought to America in the 1800’s to help their families with chores that ranged from herding livestock to protecting the children from snakes and other wild creatures. They were both companions and partners with the early farmers who helped to build America, but as the nation became less and less rural, the American Working Farm Collie began to disappear. Of course we have no way to prove that Stewie is descended from this breed, but if you do an internet search, you will find photos that show the striking resemblance.

Stewie is about five years old and is a happy, healthy boy. He still needs to gain some weight, but he has a good appetite and is extremely food and treat motivated, though he has shown no food aggression. He is housetrained, walks well on his leash and enjoys being outdoors. He is tolerant of grooming, though it isn’t something that he would give 4-paws up! He is also crate trained and willingly sleeps in his crate at night and when his foster dad is not at home.

Stewie is extremely easy going and gentle and greets everyone he meets with a wagging tail and a welcoming look in his loving brown eyes. He gets along well with other dogs and cats, and though his foster home doesn’t have children, he would almost certainly be good with them. He is usually a quiet boy, and he doesn’t like it when he hears other dogs barking on the television.

Stewie would make a sweet and loving addition to almost any home. He probably should have a fenced yard or careful outdoor supervision, since he obviously was lost at one time. He would be fine with or without other dogs, with or without cats and with or without children; lots of love, however, is mandatory. Though we don’t know the details of Stewie’s personal history or his lineage, we do know that this brave, loving dog has a disposition that shows he could easily be descended from those collies that helped to build the nation.
