Description: Hi folks! I’m Sunny and I’m the Paw of the Month, because at this time of year, I guess we all need a little sunshine. That’s what my foster mom calls me; she says I’m the sunshine of her life.

Not too long ago though, there wasn’t any sunshine for me. There wasn’t any grass or any fresh air or any love either. You see, I came from a puppy mill where we all lived in little tiny cages. The people there didn’t spend any time with us because they figured we were just like sheep or cows or pigs: something to make money for them. But then something wonderful happened. I got sprung!

When I first arrived at my foster home, I couldn’t figure out where I was or what had happened. Suddenly, I was living inside a house and there were people around almost all of the time. These people talked to me and wanted to pet me, but I wasn’t used to that and would run and hide from them in my crate. Fortunately, I had a doggie friend named Hunny Bun who came with me from the puppy mill who helped me understand what was going on. Hunny played with the other dogs at my foster home and tried to teach me to play with them too. She seemed to like the humans and would even let them touch her. I was making progress, but then Hunny went to her forever home and I had to learn to get along without her. For awhile I started hiding in my crate again, but gradually I remembered what Hunny had taught me: not all people are bad!

Well, now I have made so much progress that I am ready for my forever home too. I’m just as brave as Hunny Bun was. She would be so proud of me! I love to play with the other dogs here at my foster home and when we are all outside we like to run and jump and bark at one another. Inside the house I never bark though - foster mom says I’m such a good girl. I have even started to play with humans. Foster mom will throw a ball or a Frisbee for me, and I chase it and bring it back to her. Then we do it all over again. What fun! I like it now when she pets and brushes me: it feels good and it makes me feel loved.

Sometimes I still get scared (like if strangers come to the house and try to pet me), and then I run to my crate and hide there. Eventually, I come back out again though. I just ask myself: “What would Hunny Bun do?”

So, that’s me: Sunny. I’m still a little shy, but I’ve come a long ways. If you have a quiet home and a little patience, I might just be the collie for you. I would love to have another dog to help teach me the ropes, and I might need a little time to get used to the new things, but pretty soon I’ll open up and blossom – just like a flower in the sunshine.
