Update: February 6, 2012
Even though he has only been at his foster home for a relatively short time, Brutus' personality is already blossoming. When he first arrived, he didn't seem to know how to play. Now, thanks to his foster mom's willingness to urge him on by jumping, clapping, bouncing around and generally making a fool of herself, Brutus is starting to get the idea. He will happily run circles around her and romp about the house with his canine friends. Can toys be far behind?
Brutus was already house trained when he came to us, but he has now learned to “tell” his foster mom when he needs to go outside. He goes to her and gives her “the look.” When she asks what he wants, he runs to the door and looks back at her as if to ask, “Do I have to spell this out for you?”
Brutus is growing physically as well as emotionally, or at least his fur is. His coat was severely matted when he arrived and had to be clipped in many areas. Now it is beginning to grow back and when the process is complete he will eventually have a gorgeous, flowing mane, so he will be as beautiful on the outside as he is on the inside.
Any way you look at it, Brutus is a special boy.
Description:
When your name is Brutus you must be big, mean and tough, right? Nope! Our Brutus is friendly, gentle and loving. In fact, he is so goodhearted that he even likes that arch enemy of dogs everywhere – the mailman. Since coming to his foster home he greets the local postman every day by putting his feet up on the low fence and wagging and wiggling and inviting attention.
Brutus' love of people doesn't stop with the mailman. Every human he meets is an instant, lifelong friend. He is great with children and would be a loyal and loving buddy to kids beyond the toddler stage. Younger children might be intimidated by his size. Brutus is also friendly and affectionate with other dogs, though he doesn't seem to know how to play. His canine foster sister is trying to teach him, and regularly tries to push a toy into his mouth, but so far Brutus doesn't seem to take the hint. He would much rather cuddle than rough-house.
Brutus is a well behaved boy, who can be trusted in the house for extended periods without supervision as long as he has a canine companion. Otherwise, he should probably be crated; since, when left entirely alone, he has shown some signs of anxiety. Ideally he would like a forever home that could provide him with a doggie companion. We don't know how he would be with cats, but he has shown no interest in squirrels and no signs of herding behavior, so he would probably be cat-friendly.
Brutus is fully house trained and crate trained. He knows several commands including “come,” “sit,” “down” and “wait.” He is very tolerant of all forms of grooming from brushing to nail clipping. Brutus likes to go for car rides so he can stand and watch the world go by his window. He also walks nicely on his leash with no pulling.
Simply put, Brutus is just a sweet, sweet boy who is gentle, easy going and affectionate. When his foster mom sits down at the computer, Brutus is right there beside her with his head in her lap and his eyes fixed lovingly upon her. He will fit beautifully into any family that wants to love and be loved by a devoted collie. He doesn't need a fenced yard, but would relish another easy going doggie companion if he will be left alone for extended periods of time. Don't let the name fool you. If he were named to reflect his personality, he would probably be called Cuddle Bunny.
