Description: Ruby is MWCR’s little gem from Jewell, Iowa. She was rescued there by a kind vet who took her out of a Kansas shelter where she was in danger of being euthanized. Ruby had come to the shelter as a stray, and from the looks of her, she had been on her own for a long, long time. She was thin, dirty and so badly matted that she could barely walk. Ruby did not like her experience at the groomers which was quite an ordeal, but now she will allow her foster mom to comb her and gently pick the remaining burrs out of her coat. She sometimes resists, but will settle down when her foster mom sweet talks her.

Ruby is a tiny little collie who stands only 20 inches at the shoulder and weighs just 41 pounds. We are gradually putting some much needed weight back on her petite frame. Now that the mats on her tummy are gone, she is able to move around with much greater ease and is starting to come out of her shell. When she first arrived at her foster home, she ignored the other collies there and on occasion she ever snarled at them as if telling them to “back off.” With a little time and patience, however, Ruby began to make friends with the resident pack and now she will even initiate play using a stuffed toy or ball. She has become quite the little flirt and has taken a particular fancy to her 11 year old, collie foster brother, Reggie. Ruby wags her tail wildly at him and bumps her body up against him. Reggie is clearly flattered, but seems a little puzzled as to what it is Ruby wants!

Ruby is a fairly quiet (for a collie) little girl who will sit on command, particularly if a treat is involved. She likes to go for walks to explore her neighborhood and does well on a leash. She also plays an excellent game of fetch - brings it back every time!

Ruby is looking for a forever family where they will continue to teach her the joys of living in a loving home environment: plenty of attention, lots of good food, and a warm fluffy bed. She is still learning how to snuggle and give hugs and would do best with adults or older, gentle children. She has not been exposed to cats, but would be fine with other calm dogs. She has a definite fancy for the older boys, so a senior doggie companion would be ideal. Although Ruby initially appears shy, she is really eager to be loved and cherished.
