Post-Adoption Update: August 4, 2009 Bishop didn’t just find a forever home, he found a calling. He bonded instantly with the resident collie, Desi, and the two have been inseparable since Bishop arrived. Desi is teaching Bishop how to play with toys and Bishop is teaching Desi to sit while waiting for his leash and to listen to his mom. The relationship has made both dogs happier and better behaved.

Bishop has also bonded with his human family. His new mom was so pleased when, just days after arriving, Bishop started to bark protectively when a stranger walked by the yard. He had obviously decided that this was his forever home and it was his job to defend it. He was very proud of himself.

Bishop’s new mom considers her family blessed to have found him and the experience has been so joyful that two friends have also caught the “adoption bug” and added two rescue dogs to their families. Bishop just keeps spreading the love.

Description: Anyone who grew up watching Lassie knows that collies are smart, gentle, loving and totally devoted. Well, Bishop may not look like Lassie, but he has all of the characteristics of the ideal collie.

This handsome collie boy has impeccable manners, loves everyone he meets (human or canine), and is both gentle and obedient. He knows all the basic commands and responds to them immediately. He is a joy to take for walks and rarely barks. Bishop is fully housetrained and if the weather is nasty, he will wait for extended periods before answering nature’s call. He never requires crating and has no destructive behaviors.

Bishop is very gentle and is good with children of all ages. He has a happy, easy going manner that makes him a great companion for other dogs. He shares his food and water, and if another dog “requests” a toy that Bishop has, he generously gives it up. He loves to be with his people and wants to sleep near them, though he never jumps up on furniture.

No collie, including Lassie, is more loving and devoted than Bishop. This easy going guy deserves a forever family who will cherish him for the jewel that he is. His forever home should have a fenced yard or people that will supervise him while he is outdoors, since he will wander off after a scent when he finds it. He has excellent recall, however, and willingly returns to his people. Otherwise, Bishop’s needs are few: someone who loves him and someone he can love in return.
