Collies and Kids

Typically, Collies are wonderful with children. However, as with all breeds, individual dogs have distinct personalities, and some will be more suited to a family with children than others. If you are thinking about adding a Collie to your family and you have small children, look for a calm, outgoing, resilient dog -- a Collie with the ability to forgive, and bounce back, after stressful experiences.  Do not choose a puppy or adult dog of any breed based on looks! The infatuation you feel for that cute dog will quickly fade if the dog is not right for your family.

Also, do not expect a puppy or adult Collie to arrive in your family with perfect manners. A Collie can be a wonderful family companion if you are willing to invest the time and energy required to socialize and train him. Be very honest with yourself about this... adding a Collie isn't quite as much work as another child, but only because they grow up and learn much faster!
